The Rangers seem eager to beef up their starting rotation, so their interest in the free agent pitcher Zack Greinke seemed like a foregone conclusion as free agency kicked off earlier this month. But the Rangers have some serious competition when it comes to landing the best pitcher on the market, and the biggest threat seems to be a West Coast club with deep pockets, according to the Boston Herald’s Michael Silverman.
“According to an industry insider, the Dodgers are the favorites to wind up with top free agent starter Zack Greinke, with the Angels and Rangers on the outside looking in,” Silverman wrote this week.
The Dodgers were sold in March for a record $2 billion to a group of investors that included Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson. The new ownership group hasn’t been shy about spending wildly so far.
