Clayton Kershaw And Dodgers Agree To Contract Extension

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw reached agreement today on a 7-year $215M contract extension that includes an out-clause after five years.  The deal was first reported by ESPN.com’s Ramona Shelburne (Twitter).

dodgers_clayton_kershaw_2013According to MLB Trade Rumors (Link) Kershaw was expected to earn $18.25M in arbitration (final year) which would break the arbitration record of $15.5M set by Prince Fielder in 2011.

MLB Trade Rumors also reports that his agency (Excel Sports Management) have secured him the highest-ever annual salary for a baseball player at $30.7M AAV.  The previous two best were the one-year, $28MM deal for Roger Clemens back in 2007 and Alex Rodriguez‘s ten-year, $275M deal.

Additionally, MLB Trade Rumors points out that it’s he highest “new money” contract. Larger then the  seven-year, $161MM C.C. Sabathia deal by $54M. It’s much higher than recent deals of  Zack Greinke‘s $147M free agent pact and the extensions of Cole Hamels ($144M), Justin Verlander ($140M), and Felix Hernandez ($135.5M).

Set to turn 26 years old on March 19th has already built himself a nice resume. He has won the Cy Young Award twice (2011 & 2013), led the league in strikeouts in both Cy Young years, and led the league in ERA the last three seasons. His 1206 strikeouts before his 26th birthday are the 9th most in major league history.

According to sources, the long-term extension to Kershaw will not stop the Dodgers pursuit of Masahiro Tanaka or another pitcher.
