Typically, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh advocates for competition at every position. But Harbaugh was unusually comfortable with the notion of Colt McCoy as the main backup to starter Colin Kaepernick at quarterback.
“He has been in that role since he got here,” Harbaugh said. “He’s doing very well, picking up the system. And a guy that is really serious and focused on being good and doing a good job. He’s got a lot of things that motivate him to work hard. And he’s worked extra hard, too. He’s doing well.”
Last year, the team was in a Kaepernick-like scramble to back up Alex Smith. Kaepernick won the backup duties and Scott Tolzien beat out Josh Johnson for the third spot. Now, it appears Tolzien will have to fend off rookie B.J. Daniels to defend his roster spot.
