Chris Archer Receives Honors

After dominating the competition going 4-0 with an 0.73 ERA (3ER/37IP) 22 strike outs 7 walks and holding  the opposition to a .140 batting average  the Tampa Bay Rays Chris Archer was named the AL Rookie of the Month and Pitcher of the Month for July.

According to the Press Release from Major League Baseball it is only the sixth time since the Rookie of the Month Award was introduced in 2001 that a Player or Pitcher of the Month Award winner has garnered Rookie honors in the same calendar month.  Archer joins Dontrelle Willis (FLA, June 2003), Ryan Braun (MIL, July 2007), Jeremy Hellickson (TB, May 2011), Mike Trout (LAA, July 2012) and Yasiel Puig (LAD, July 2013) as the only players to accomplish the feat.

His month included two complete game shutouts. The first came against the Houston Astros in a 5-0 Rays victory on July 14th and then he became the first Rays pitcher in franchise history to throw a complete game shut out against the New York Yankees in a Rays 1-0 victory on July 27th. It was the Rays 268th game against the Yankees.

He was not a unanimous winner for either award as teammate David Price (5-1, 1.68 ERA) received votes for Pitcher of the Month and Wil Myers, after hitting .352 with 4 HR and 18, received votes for Rookie of the Month.

For winning the award Archer will receive two specially designed trophies suitably engraved with the accomplishment.

I am a fan of all sports but am most passionate about baseball. From the fanatical to analytical, nothing about the game escapes me. Being born and raised in Northeast Ohio I'm very familiar with the heartache and pain that sports can bring and hope that I bring some understanding of the other side to my coverage. I will focus mostly on baseball but also cover the Tampa Bay Lightning, one of the most electric franchises in all of sports. Always willing to converse about any sport and have only one rule and that is be respectful at all times.
