Bucs Select CB Johnthan Banks at 43

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have selected Mississippi State cornerback Johnthan Banks with the 43rd overall pick, the team’s first pick of this year’s NFL Draft.

A 6-foot-2, 185-pound ballhawk, Banks was a four-year starter for the Bulldogs, where he recorded 15 career interceptions, and 27 pass breakups in three years.

He recorded 63 tackles alone in his senior year as a team captain, and was awarded the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation’s top defensive back.

Prior to the NFL Scouting Combine, many had considered Banks one of, if not the top cornerback in the draft. But a sluggish 4.61 40 time, along with ultra-fast times by his peers, Dee Milliner (4.31) and Desmond Tufant (4.38), Banks stock dropped just a bit.

Banks was the sixth cornerback taken, behind Dee Milliner (9), D.J. Hayden (12), Desmond Trufant (22), Xavier Rhodes (25), teammate Darius Slay (36).
