NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Drew Brees has set an NFL record with touchdown passes in 48 straight games, breaking the mark set by Johnny Unitas a half-century ago.
The record-setting scoring strike was a 40-yard pass to Devery Henderson against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday night.
Unitas set the record between 1956 and 1960 and no one had come within 10 games until Brees began to close in late last season. Tom Brady has the third-longest streak, extending his to 37 games Sunday in a victory over Denver.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Sean Payton arrived at the Superdome to see his first Saints game since being suspended the entire season in connection with the NFL’s bounty investigation. It allowed him to see Drew Brees break Johnny Unitas’ half-century old record of 47 consecutive games with a touchdown pass.
At Brees’ request, the NFL has allowed Payton, assistant head coach Joe Vitt and general manager Mickey Loomis to attend the game as long as they did not have contact with the team. Arrangements were made to place Payton in a suite and he was told not to speak with media.
Payton briefly stopped by a suite owned by Brees and chatted with the quarterback’s wife, Brittany. Vitt was suspended six games and Loomis was docked eight.
