Looking into the offseason plans for the newly crowned World Champion Boston Red Sox, one of their biggest position to address will be first base, and after missing out on Jose Abreu earlier in the week, the team, now more than ever, must try to re-sign Mike Napoli.
The first base market is thin this offseason, with the biggest names being Kendrys Morales and Justin Morneau, and Napoli played better than both of them this season:
Player AVG OBP SLG HR RBI
Mike Napoli .259 .360 .482 23 92
Kendrys Morales .277 .336 .449 23 80
Justin Morneau .259 .323 .411 17 77
Napoli originally had a three-year deal with Boston last offseason before having it reduced to just one year after health concerns arose over Napoli’s hip, but this offseason Napoli should have no problem landing a multi-year deal.
Napoli has already stated that he would like to return to the Red Sox, and it would actually be more surprising to see him leave than return giving the lack of available first basemen on the market and the fact that Napoli was a key player in the team’s World Series title run this season.
