Bills Draft Manuel, Werner and Rhodes Go in 1st

The Buffalo Bills have selected Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel with the 16th overall pick, becoming the first quarterback taken off the board in this year’s NFL draft.

The Bills passed on West Virginia’s Geno Smith, a player many regarded as the top quarterback prospect, and Ryan Nassib, who played for Buffalo’s new head coach Doug Marrone at Syracuse.

Manuel reportedly drew interest from the Browns, Eagles, Jets, and Bills, but the Bills didn’t appear to be a serious contender to land the Senior Bowl MVP, who finished his career with the Noles 25-6 as a starter.

Manuel’s teammate in Tallahassee, defensive end Bjoern Werner, was selected 24th overall by the Indianapolis Colts.

On the very next selection at 25, the Minnesota Vikings chose Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes.
