Ben Zobrist To Represent Rays in Midsummer Classic

The Rays sole representative to the AL All-Star team is 2b/OF Ben Zobrist. He will be making his second All-Star appearance – the first in 2009 in St.Louis. He entered the game in the top of the 8th inning to pinch hit for former Texas Rangers 3b Michael Young and struck out against former Padres closer Heath Bell.  He remained in the game at 2b for the final 2-innings of the American Leagues 4-3 victory.

Ben Zobirst’s reaction to being selected to the All-Star Game:

“I was shocked. I was really puzzled as to why I was coming into the principal’s office before the game….When they showed me the envelope and said that Leyland had selected me as one of the guys to come off the bench possibly – it’s a huge honor. I don’t feel like I’ve necessarily played the way I’m capable of playing up to this point, but obviously I  still feel like I can help the club win. And hopefully if we win that game, we could possibly make it to the World Series and that would give us home field advantage. It’s an important game still. I look forward to being there and seeing what I can do. ”

Joe Maddon was happy with Zobrist selection:

“I love the selection from the perspective that a complete game matters, It’s  not just about batting average. Ben personifies the complete baseball player and has done so year in and year out. It’s great to see him recognized for it.”

I am a fan of all sports but am most passionate about baseball. From the fanatical to analytical, nothing about the game escapes me. Being born and raised in Northeast Ohio I'm very familiar with the heartache and pain that sports can bring and hope that I bring some understanding of the other side to my coverage. I will focus mostly on baseball but also cover the Tampa Bay Lightning, one of the most electric franchises in all of sports. Always willing to converse about any sport and have only one rule and that is be respectful at all times.
