Moore Than Just A Loss, Rays Lose Lefty & Fall To Royals 4-2
Matt Moore’s Elbow A Cause For Concern
When is a loss more than just a loss? When one of a teams top pitchers walks off the mound in apparent pain and the initials MRI are spoken by the team.
Last night Matt Moore threw a change up for the final out to retire Lorenzo Cain and felt a little tightness in the elbow. Finally, after a 1-2 changeup to Norichika Aoki he grimaced in pain and called catcher Ryan Hanigan to the mound.
The two were soon joined by Joe Maddon and assistant team trainer Paul Harker. Moore lobbied to say in the game but the cautious Rays took him out. Last season Moore missed 31 games with a strained elbow which like last night caused problems when he threw his changeup.
The Royals were leading 1-0 when Moore departed and Cesar Ramos held them at bay in the fifth but they broke through against Heath Bell in the sixth inning keyed by a bases clearing double by Alcides Escobar.
Jason Vargas was on his game taking a shutuout into the ninth inning before yielding a solo homer to Ben Zobrist to lead off the frame and being removed for closer Greg Holland. The Rays were able to plate one run off Holland on a Matt Joyce pinch hit single and did manage to bring the tying run to the plate but Holland slammed the door.
