In the two years right-hander Doug Fister has pitched for the Detroit Tigers in the playoffs, he has started the first game of a series twice and the second game of a series twice. Once he started Game 3, but that was because of how the rotation set up in the previous series, not because his manager designated him the Game 3 starter.
That start, by the way, was against Texas, during the American League Championship Series in 2011. Fister went 71⁄3 innings and gave up two runs. The Tigers won.
When he takes the mound to face the A’s today it will be the first time he has waited this long to pitch in a playoff series.
