With Zobrist Out Rays Turn To Cole Figueroa

Well Deserved Major League Debut Awaits In Los Angeles

Ben Zobrist dislocated his thumb during yesterday’s 2-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners and is expected to land   on the disabled list.

To take his spot on the 25-man roster the Rays have sent infielder Cole Figueroa from their Triple-A affiliate Durham Bulls out to the West Coast to take Zobrist’s place.

The 26-year old left handed hitter is off to a good start in Durham posting a triple slash line of .299/.397/.462 with three home runs. He has displayed a keen eye at the plate walking 20 times and striking out only 16 in his 145 plate appearances.

He will be the fourth member of the Jason Bartlett trade back in December of 2010 to appear on the Rays active roster. The other involved in that trade were Cesar Ramos, Brandon Gomes, and Adam Russell.

With the Bulls he has played all over the infield appearing in three games at second base, 15 at shortstop, and 17 at third base.  With the Rays it is expected that he will be given the opportunity to start against right handed pitchers while Logan Forsythe or Sean Rodriguez handle the position against left handed pitchers.

Figueroa has been waiting for his opportunity and has already logged 250 games and 1025 plate appearances at the Triple-A level posting a respectable .288/.360/.386 triple slash line. He will finally get his opportunity to show that he has nothing left to prove in Durham and has a chance to force his way on to the roster long term with a solid showing while Zobrist is out.

Ben Zobrist Suffers Dislocated Left Thumb

I am a fan of all sports but am most passionate about baseball. From the fanatical to analytical, nothing about the game escapes me. Being born and raised in Northeast Ohio I'm very familiar with the heartache and pain that sports can bring and hope that I bring some understanding of the other side to my coverage. I will focus mostly on baseball but also cover the Tampa Bay Lightning, one of the most electric franchises in all of sports. Always willing to converse about any sport and have only one rule and that is be respectful at all times.
