Tempers Flare As Rays Defeat Red Sox 8-5

Rays Use Five Run Seventh To Defeat Red Sox 8-5

The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Boston Red Sox by a final score of 8-5 to improve 23-28 on the year and complete the sweep of the Boston Red Sox. The Sox dropped their tenth game in a row and are in last place in the AL East with a record of 20-29.

Their were many highlights during the game from an impressive performance by Jake Odorizzi and home runs by Evan Longoria and Sean Rodriguez but an incident in the bottom of the seventh will be talked about most.

The Rays had just added two more runs to increase their lead to  8-3 on a Yunel Escobar  double. With the Red Sox defense not paying attention Escobar stole third base which irked some unknown member on the Red Sox bench.

Escobar and the unknown player briefly exchanged words as Escobar left third base and headed toward the Red Sox dugout.  This prompted Jonny Gomes to race in from left and A.J. Pierzynski came down the line from behind home plate yelling at Escobar which resulted in both benches emptying.

The scrum resulted in ejections for Yunel Escobar and Sean Rodriguez from the Rays and Jonny Gomes from the Red Sox. More on the incident and the game will be coming for now here are Joe Maddon and Sean Rodriguez’s comments.

I am a fan of all sports but am most passionate about baseball. From the fanatical to analytical, nothing about the game escapes me. Being born and raised in Northeast Ohio I'm very familiar with the heartache and pain that sports can bring and hope that I bring some understanding of the other side to my coverage. I will focus mostly on baseball but also cover the Tampa Bay Lightning, one of the most electric franchises in all of sports. Always willing to converse about any sport and have only one rule and that is be respectful at all times.
