Tampa Bay Rays Defeat Toronto Blue Jays 6-3

Erik Bedard Makes His Case As Teams Fifth Starter

Erik Bedard in competition with Jake Odorizzi and Cesar Ramos for the 5th spot in the Tampa Bay Rays rotation allowed three runs all earned in 4.1 innings of work on six hit striking out three and walking one.

The Blue Jays got their first run on a wind aided triple by Kevin Pillar in the second inning and he came in to score the Jays second run on a wild pitch. Bedard settled down after that and after the game said he was looking for more consistency this spring. “I think it was OK, just need to be more consistent with my off-speed and everything will be better after that.”

When Bedard was told that Joe Maddon had said that the decision on who the third starter will be will not be based on statistics he jokingly said, “that’s good because the ERA isn’t good right now.”

A quartet of relievers – Brandon Gomes, Grant Balfour, Joel Peralta and Brad Boxberger — combined to hold the Blue Jays hitless over the final 4.2 innings.

The Rays offense was keyed by a Grand Slam off the bat of Mikie Mahtook who had been summoned from minor league camp due to the split squad game.

I am a fan of all sports but am most passionate about baseball. From the fanatical to analytical, nothing about the game escapes me. Being born and raised in Northeast Ohio I'm very familiar with the heartache and pain that sports can bring and hope that I bring some understanding of the other side to my coverage. I will focus mostly on baseball but also cover the Tampa Bay Lightning, one of the most electric franchises in all of sports. Always willing to converse about any sport and have only one rule and that is be respectful at all times.
