Mark Buehrle Fans 11 En Route To Jays 3-0 Victory
Buehrle came within one batter of tossing a complete game. In his 8.2 innings of work he only allowed four hits striking out 11 batters and walking only one.
With two outs in the ninth inning Ben Zobrist smashed a single off the glove of third baseman Brett Lawrie ending Buehrle’s quest at the complete game shutout. Sergio Santos came in to face Evan Longoria who drew the walk bringing Matt Joyce, representing the tying run, off the Rays bench to pinch hit for Logan Forsythe. Jays manager John Gibbons countered the left handed bat of Matt Joyce by removing by bringing in lefty Brett Cecil who struck out Joyce to end the ballgame earning his first save of the season.
The victory gave the Blue Jays their first back to back wins in a single season at Tropicana Field for just the second time since 2008. Tomorrow they will send Brandon Morrow to the hill to oppose Chris Archer as the Jays look for their first series victory at Tropicana Field since April 6 through 8, 2007. Since that April 2007 series the Jays have a series record of 0-19-1 in St. Petersburg.
Matt Moore did not pitch poorly going 5.2 innings of work allowing two earned runs on six hits striking out four and walking three. The Jays did their damage against Moore in the span of three batters in the fourth inning. Jose Bautista led off with a home run to give the Jays the early 1-0. Edwin Encarnacion followed Bautista’s homer with a double and came in to score on a single by Dioner Navarro.
Brandon Gomes came in relief of Moore with runners at second and third and two out in the sixth inning. John Gibbons sent the left handed bat of Adam Lind to face Gomes who issued the intentional walk to load the bases and departed for Jake McGee who retired Melky Cabrera to end the threat.
Josh Lueke came in to work the seventh inning and gave up a solo homer to Jose Bautista to put the Jays up 3-0. Heath Bell worked a scoreless eighth inning and gave way to Grant Balfour to work the ninth. Balfour showed some rust hitting Colby Rasmus and walking Jose Bautista but escaped the inning without yielding a run.
