Rays Only Muster 3-Hits In Falling To Jays 5-0

Last night Cesar Ramos and Jake Odorizzi made their final statements in the competition to fill the void in the Rays rotation opened up when Jeremy Hellickson’s elbow flared up and he required surgery putting him on the shelf until June.

Bedard_3_10_2014Both Ramos and Odorizzi felt that they pitch well, not only last night but all spring, and would be disappointed if not named to the open rotation spot.

Today, Erik Bedard allowed four runs (all earned) on eight hits striking out four and walking one in 5.2 innings of work.

After his outing he discussed the clause in his contract that allows him to opt-out of his contract on March 31st rather than report to the minor leagues.

“The opt-out is just because a lot of guys have been hurt,” Bedard said. “I think probably everybody would do the same thing. If nobody gets hurt, I’d go with the flow and if I go to Triple A, I’ll go to Triple A.”

Rays Manager Joe Maddon has said that he isn’t a fan of looking at Spring Training stats and this bodes well for Bedard (6.88 ERA) but he understands that they’ll still look at a few numbers, “They’re going to crunch some numbers and go with their gut feeling. It’s a great opportunity, I love the team, the organization. We’ll see.”

After his start Joe Maddon said that he felt Bedard’s velocity was up a tick which was true according to stadium radar guns that had him hitting 92-mph.

Maddon says the decision as to who will be the fifth starter will resume in the morning and that the team had a spirited discussion in the morning before coming out to play the Blue Jays.  The decision is a tough one, “it’s not easy,” Maddon said. “They’ve all represented themselves extremely well.”

I am a fan of all sports but am most passionate about baseball. From the fanatical to analytical, nothing about the game escapes me. Being born and raised in Northeast Ohio I'm very familiar with the heartache and pain that sports can bring and hope that I bring some understanding of the other side to my coverage. I will focus mostly on baseball but also cover the Tampa Bay Lightning, one of the most electric franchises in all of sports. Always willing to converse about any sport and have only one rule and that is be respectful at all times.
