BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today activated right-hander Joel Hanrahan from the 15-day disabled list. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-hander Daniel Bard was optioned to Double-A Portland after Sunday’s win against Houston.
Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.
Hanrahan, 31, has been on the disabled list since April 16 (retroactive to April 14) with a right hamstring strain. He made rehab appearances for Triple-A Pawtucket on April 26 and 28, and allowed two runs in his 2.0 innings of work. Hanrahan is 0-1 with three saves, an 11.57 ERA (6 ER/4.2 IP), and four strikeouts over six relief outings for the Red Sox this season. He will be available for tonight’s game in Toronto.
The 27-year-old Bard made two relief appearances for Boston after his April 24 recall, allowing one run on one hit and two walks with one strikeout in 1.0 inning of work. He will rejoin Portland where he was 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA (4 ER/9.0 IP) with four walks and four strikeouts in eight games out of the bullpen.
