There’s A Lot Riding On The Last Day Of The Season In Baseball

UNDATED (AP) — Who will win the American League East, or for that matter the AL West? Today is the final day of the regular season in baseball and the Yankees top the Orioles by a game in the East while the Rangers and Athletics are tied for first in the West. On tap tonight, the Yankees are playing the Red Sox, the Orioles are facing the Rays and the Athletics are playing host to the Rangers.

UNDATED (AP) — Despite the fact each team has a record of 97-64, Washington has the upper hand over Cincinnati in the battle for best record in the National League. If the Nats beat the Phillies this afternoon they’ll clinch the best mark in the league no matter what the Reds do this evening against the Cardinals. That’s because the Nationals won the season series between the two teams.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — This has been a special season for Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera. Entering the final game of the season he is on the verge of doing something that has not been done since 1967, win a Triple Crown. Cabrera has 44 home runs, a .331 batting average and 139 runs batted in. The last man to win the Crown was Boston’s Carl Yastrzemski (yah-STREM’-skee).

SEATTLE (AP) — Jered Weaver of the Angels is looking for his 21st win of the season tonight. If he’s able to get the W against the Mariners in Seattle, he would tie Washington’s Gio Gonzalez as the winningest pitcher in baseball this season.
