TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — The New York Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez begins a short minor league injury rehab assignment in Trenton Friday night as the slugger tries to return to the major leagues before an expected suspension.
Rodriguez played a simulated game Thursday at the team’s spring training complex in Florida, with the Yankees afterward saying he will play for the Trenton Thunder against Reading for two games through Saturday.
Monday appears to be the deadline for Rodriguez and 13 other players to accept suspensions for their ties to the Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic.
It’s considered unlikely the Yankees would bring him back up to the majors while they play a series in San Diego this weekend. If he’s not suspended by Monday, the three-time MVP could rejoin the Yankees as they open a series against the Chicago White Sox.
