Tuck: Nick Franklin’s Dream Diet

Seattle Mariners SS Nick Franklin is from Orlando.  To be more specific, Longwood.  He went to Lake Brantley High School and was named the Orlando Sentinel player of the year in 2009.  Later that year, Seattle took Franklin in the first round of the MLB Draft, 27th overall.

He hasn’t made the big leagues yet, but is getting closer.  One problem he was running into was he was too small.  So how to fix that?

The 162 lb. Franklin decided to eat.  From the Seattle Times:

It’s part of a plan the former first-round draft pick hopes will take him from the 6-foot-1, 162-pound frame he finished last season with to a 200-pound body by opening day. He arrived at spring training weighing 196 pounds — a 34-pound gain from last September — and drawing plenty of second glances wherever he goes.

“Last year, during the season, I felt my body starting to collapse on me,” Franklin said of a 2012 season split between Class AA and AAA. “At the end of August, I weighed 162 pounds and I was hitting balls to the gap that probably should have been out and they ended up going off the wall. One of them bounced to the wall.

That diet consists of things like Chipotle, Chik-Fil-A, and Carabbas.  Where do I sign up for that???  An example of a typical day where he may digest as much as 6500 calories looks like this:

Franklin beefs up with several 500-calorie shakes a day.

Breakfast: Two chicken biscuits, sausage breakfast burrito and “bacon platter” from Chick-Fil-A. (1970 calories.)

Lunch: Burrito bowl with double meat, all of the salsas, sour cream, cheese and guacamole from Chipotle. (1315 calories.)

Dinner: Regular-sized Calamari Ricardo appetizer, Pasta Weesie and cup of sausage and lentil soup. (3235 calories.)
