It is never too early to look into the trade deadline and at players on one-year, or possibly multi-year deals that are candidates to switch jerseys by the end of July.
One possible trade candidate is Chicago Cubs RHP Jason Hammel.
The Cubs signed Hammel as a free agent to a one-year $6MM deal with another $1MM in incentives this past offseason, and he is definitely proving to be a bargain thus far.
In fives games started so far this season, Hammel is 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA and 0.687 WHIP, which leads the majors. However, the Cubs will likely look to do the same with Hammel as they did with Scott Feldman last season, trade him at the deadline after signing him to a cheap one-year deal.
Starting pitchers are always in need throughout the league, and the Cubs might be able to get a significant return for a playoff hopeful team if Hammel can keep pitching at the level he has to start the season.
