Ben Zobrist Suffers Dislocated Left Thumb

In yesterday’s game against the Mariners, Rays utility man Ben Zobrist suffered a dislocated left thumb.

The team has said they will have Zobrist sit out the upcoming series in Anaheim and re-evaluate him once they return to the Trop on Tuesday.

A brief trip to the DL seems likely, though the injury does not appear to be a long-term concern.

Through 177 plate appearances, Zobrist owned a somewhat disappointing .258/.352/.364 line with three home runs and three stolen bases.

Given the Rays recent struggles, Zobrist, who is earning just $7MM this year, could potentially become yet another trade piece the team could dangle at the deadline if they cannot turn things around.

His contract, one of the most team-friendly in the game, might suggest otherwise though, as he still has a club option for next season at $7.5MM (with a $500K buyout).
