Opening Day Flashback: Crawford and the Devil Rays

In honor of today’s home opener between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays, let’s take a trip down memory lane and see what happened back in 2005 when Tampa Bay was still named the Devil Rays. They faced Toronto on Opening Day and lost, 5-2.

The game was played on April 4th, 2005 at Tropicana Field and the Rays’ lineup featured players like Carl Crawford, Julio Lugo, Josh Phelps, and Chris Singleton.

Blue Jays vs Rays 2005

How can we forget “The Perfect Storm”, AKA Carl Crawford? He was drafted in 2002 by the Rays and he was named the Most Outstanding Rookie that year. His MLB debut was in the game against the Blue Jays in 2002 and he had his first hit in that game. Crawford batted .301 in 2005 and became the third .300 hitter in Devil Rays history.

Crawford now plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers and he and his fiance just welcomed a baby boy last week. They named him Carl Leo and Crawford told the LA Times that the name means a lot. He said he wants his son to have every aspect of him.
