Joe Maddon Playing The Splits Versus Mariners Iwakuma

The Tampa Bay Rays will kick off their series with the Seattle Mariners tonight at 10:10 p.m. The Rays will send Alex Cobb (8-3, 2.82 ERA) versus the Seattle Mariners Hisashi Iwakuma (5-10, 4.68 ERA).

Rays_Joe_Maddon_2013Since he was acquired David DeJesus has led off against right handed pitchers and Delmon Young was signed  to DH versus left handed pitchers but with Mariners right hander Hisashi Iwakuma on the mound Joe Maddon has Desmond Jennings leading off and Delmon Young at DH. David DeJesus is not in the lineup.

Rays Lineup: Desmond Jennings (CF), Ben Zobrist (2b), Evan Longoria (3b), Matt Joyce (LF), Delmon Young (DH), James Loney (1b), Wil Myers (RF), Jose Molina (C), and Yunel Escobar (SS)

The reason for adding the two right handers to the lineups can be found in the reverse splits of Iwakuma.  In his brief major league career he has held left handed hitters to a .225 average .225 (140 for 621) and an OPS (on-base% + slugging%) of .641.  Right handed hitters have fared slightly better hitting .244 (137 for 562) and an OPS of .713.

The split has been more pronounced in 2013. Iwakuma  has held left handed hitters to an average of .214 (85 for 397) and an OPS of .597. Right handed hitters have an average against him of .246 (55 for 224) with an OPS of .716.

Left handed hitters Matt Joyce and James Loney remain in the Rays lineup and it will be interesting to see which side of the plate Ben Zobrist will hit from against Iwakuma.

Mariners Lineup: Brad Miller (SS),  Franklin Gutierrez (RF), Kyle Seager (3b), Kendrys Morales (DH), Raul Ibanez (LF), Justin Smoak (1b), Mike Zunino (C), Dustin Ackley (CF), Nick Franklin (2b),

I am a fan of all sports but am most passionate about baseball. From the fanatical to analytical, nothing about the game escapes me. Being born and raised in Northeast Ohio I'm very familiar with the heartache and pain that sports can bring and hope that I bring some understanding of the other side to my coverage. I will focus mostly on baseball but also cover the Tampa Bay Lightning, one of the most electric franchises in all of sports. Always willing to converse about any sport and have only one rule and that is be respectful at all times.
