News of a pitcher retiring slipped under the radar for most folks yesterday.
Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reported that Joe Blanton decided to retire. While no official announcement has been made, Blanton has spent the 2014 season in the Oakland A’s minor league system after being released by the Angels this spring.
Joe Blanton pitched for 10 years in the Majors, though he was never more than a middle of the rotation guy, amassing an 85-89 record with a career 4.51 ERA for the A’s, Phillies, Angels, and Dodgers.
He is still owed money by the Angels as a result of a guaranteed contract signed before 2013 ($7.5MM) and Jon Heyman of CBS Sports says that his career earnings are around $47 million.
