Gregory Polanco, Pirates Far Apart In Contract Talks

Report: Pirates, Gregory Polanco Not Close To Extension

The Pirates tried to sign Gregory Polanco to a team-friendly long term deal before calling him up to the bigs but Polanco wasn’t interested.

Gregory Polanco wound up being called up to the big leagues anyway and has prospered thus far, hitting .319/.402/.417 with two home runs, 10 RBIs, and four stolen bases across 17 games.

The power hasn’t showed up yet, and he might not ever be a 20-plus home run guy, but he has proven that all the buzz surrounding him wasn’t misguided.

This just means a long-term deal is only going to be more difficult to complete now than ever before, and the two sides are reportedly far apart in their talks right now.

Though it’s hard to turn down guaranteed money when you’re still three years away from your first significant payday at the big league level, if Gregory Polanco keeps hitting, there are much, much larger sums of money waiting for him in the not-too-distant future.
