Earlier this morning, the Rays’ Todd Kalas tweeted an interesting statistic: in three weeks since Alex Cobb hit the disabled list, no starter other than David Price or Chris Archer has gone more than five innings in a start.
That ended today as Erik Bedard gave Joe Maddon six-plus innings allowing one earned run with three strikeouts.
This was some much needed relief for a Rays team that made a move possibly out of desperation in designating Heath Bell for assignment earlier today.
The Rays recalled Nate Karns from Triple-A Durham so that he could provide innings out of the pen in case Bedard struggled or the game went into extra innings, but the decision of who to designate came down to Bell and Josh Lueke.
The Rays, however, believe Lueke still has more upside than he has shown thus far and decided to designate the 36-year old Bell for assignment instead despite his hefty $5.5MM price tag.
