UPDATE: While the length of the rumored new deal is still unknown, Jon Morosi of Fox Sports reports the AAV of the new deal should be right around $30MM:

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Detroit Tigers are nearing a huge contract extension with superstar 1B Miguel Cabrera:

There will still need to be a physical before anything is finalized, but Cabrera has a remarkable record for staying healthy.

The two-time defending AL MVP and the Tigers have been working on the deal in the last few days, and word is they are close to finalizing the agreement. The terms of a new deal aren’t known yet but a physical will need to be completed before anything is finalized.

Cabrera, 30, has been playing on a $152-million, eight-year contract that is due to expire after the 2015 season. People close to him say he loves being a Tiger, and suggested he’s willing to take less than top free-agent dollar to stay in Detroit.
