When a Boston police officer was captured by photographers with his arms in a celebratory victory sign as David Ortiz’s game-tying grand slam sent Torii Hunter flying into the bullpen, he instantly became a classic symbol of Beantown sports fans everywhere.
According to ESPN Boston’s Joe McDonald, who tracked him down after the game, his name is Steve Horgan and he’s a 50-year-old native of South Walpole, Mass. He has been on the police force for 27 years.
He told ESPN that he too had been working on a playoff beard. And now even his boss, he said, told him not to touch it.
