Miami Dolphins Have “Some Things To Sort Out” At Tight End

You can pencil in tight end Charles Clay as the Miami Dolphins’ starter after a breakout year in 2013 during which he caught 69 passes for 759 yards and six touchdowns. However, the depth chart gets a bit cloudier behind him.

“We’ve still got some things to sort out,” Philbin said of the tight end position, via the Miami Herald.

The Dolphins failed to address the concern during free agency but did add former Georgia Bulldog Arthur Lynch in the fifth round of the draft. They also have Michael Egnew on the roster, but he has yet to develop into a viable option in the passing game.

Meanwhile, second-year player Dion Sims is expected to contribute more on offense.

“[Sims] has a lot of great traits [but] he has some work to do,” Philbin said.

The Dolphins find themselves in a difficult situation and will need to come to a decision on who will be Clay’s backup this summer. With Clay as the standout receiver, the Dolphins may benefit from keeping a guy who excels in blocking, which would eliminate Dion Sims. Pro Football Focus currently lists Sims as the backup tight and lead player for the “Y” role though.

Former third-round pick Michael Egnew could be entering his final offseason with the Dolphins himself, as he’s failed to live up to the expectations placed on him coming out of Missouri in 2012. He had just seven receptions for 69 yards last season—a far cry from the game-changing contributor he was projected to be. Like Sims, Egnew is not a noteworthy blocker and that could put him atop the chopping block over the younger Sims and rookie Lynch.

The tight end position will definitely be one to keep an eye on throughout the summer as the Dolphins attempt to “sort out” their situation behind the starter Clay. It will be interesting to see if Egnew or Sims can elevate their performance and take the next step in their pro careers, or if Lynch can make an immediate impact and earn valuable playing time on offense as a rookie.
