Mets LF Bay Believes Subpar Years Behind Him

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) — Jason Bay says he’s finally ready to have the kind of season the New York Mets expected out of him when he was signed three years ago.

The leftfielder arrived at the Mets spring training facility Thursday and said he’s healthy after being slowed his first two years in New York by concussion, rib and shoulder issues. It’s hardly the kind of return the Mets thought they’d get when he signed a $66 million deal.

Bay says that sentiment hasn’t been lost on him and he spent the offseason getting back to basics, including hitting alone off a makeshift tee.

Mets manager Terry Collins said he expects Bay to be himself as well, and plans for him to hit in the No. 5 slot behind David Wright and Ike Davis.
