McCutchen Deals With Stardom In Stride

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) — Andrew McCutchen insists he will not change even while he becomes one of baseball’s biggest young stars.

The 26-year-old finished third in National League MVP voting in 2012 after hitting .327 with 31 homers and 96 RBIs. His performance made Pittsburgh’s decision to offer him a six-year, $51-million contract extension last spring a downright bargain.

The baseball world has taken notice. McCutchen won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger Award last year and his face graces the cover of a popular baseball video game.

McCutchen says he’s growing comfortable with his newfound fame but remains focused on turning the Pirates into winners. Pittsburgh hasn’t had a player like McCutchen since Barry Bonds left more than 20 years ago.

Unlike Bonds, though, McCutchen has no plans on leaving.
