Max Scherzer Goes For 18th Win
UNDATED (AP) — The Detroit Tigers are hoping the major league wins leader can lead them out of a mini-slump. Detroit turns to 17-1 Max Scherzer when they visit the White Sox tonight. Detroit has dropped three of four since running off a 12-game winning streak. Scherzer is 4-0, allowing just four earned runs in 28 1-3 innings since starting for the American League in the All-Star game next month.
The AL Central leading Tigers are starting to feel some pressure from up-and-coming Kanas City. The Royals have shot into second place in the division and are only four games back of the Tigers after winning 17 of their last 20. Bruce Chen will be making his sixth start for the Royals since coming out of the bullpen when he pitches against Miami tonight. Chen is 5-0.
Texas is riding the high of Yu Darvish’s one-hit, 15-strikeout performance heading into the start of a home series against Milwaukee tonight. Yesterday’s pitching gem against Houston ran the Rangers’ winning streak to eight games and ended their road trip with a one-game lead over Oakland for the top spot in the AL West.
The A’s are hoping Bartolo Colon got the bad pitching out of his system the last time out, as he’s scheduled to take his 14-4 record to the mound at home against the Astros. Colon allowed five runs in 2 2-3 innings in his shortest outing of the season against Cincinnati. Before that he was 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA in five previous starts.
The Dodgers hitters may have a tough time generating much offense when they host the Mets tonight. New York has Matt Harvey scheduled to start. He’s 9-3 with a 2.09 ERA that is second best in the majors, behind L.A.’s Clayton Kershaw. The Dodgers should be well represented on the mound with 11-3 Hyun-Jin Ryu getting the start. His .786 winning percentage is the highest for a rookie in Dodgers history.
