Marshall Point Guard Joins USF Basketball Squad
Head coach Orlando Antigua announced the addition of point guard Kareem Canty to the USF mens basketball team.
Canty, a three-star recruit out of Harlem, N.Y., averaged a team-high 16.3 points and 5.5 assists per game for Marshall University last season as a redshirt freshman. The 6-1 point guard also finished as the team leader in three-pointers made at 65, which along with 180 total assists, ranked 10th all-time for a single season at Marshall. Canty was named to Conference USAs Third Team and to the C-USA All-Freshman team.
Kareem is a pure point guard that can make his teammates better and can really score the ball, Antigua said. He had an outstanding freshman season at Marshall and is another in the line of great point guards out of New York.
Prior to Marshall, Canty played at Faith Baptist Christian in nearby Brandon, Fla. for one year to finish his high school career. He earned a national point guard ranking of No. 25 or better by all three major recruiting sites, ESPN.com, Rivals.com and Scout.com.
His successful freshman campaign came after not being able to practice or compete during the 2012-13 season as an academic non-qualifier. Canty will have to sit out the upcoming 2014-15 season in accordance to NCAA transfer rules and will then have two years of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2015-16 season.
Canty will join center/forward Ruben Guerrero, guard Troy Holston, guard Dinero Mercurius and forward Nehemias Morillo as additions to the roster for the upcoming season.
