Jacob Turner Picks Up First Win Of 2014

After setting a new Marlins Park record by combining to hit 7 home runs in last night’s game, the Marlins and Brewers combined for just 3 runs last night.

With the help of Jacob Turner, the Marlins managed to even the weekend series with the Brewers.

Turner threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings on 8 hits and 1 walk, picking up his first win of the season and his first win in his last 17 starts, dating back to last season.

We hope this is a sign of what is to come for Turner, as even with Saturday’s strong performance his ERA sits at a lofty 5.35 on the season.

Mike Dunn and A.J. Ramos combined to throw 1 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and a run.

Steve Chisek came in with 2 out in the eighth and struck out Brewers second basemen Scooter Gennett on a foul tip.

Chisek went on to work a scoreless ninth, striking out both Logan Schafer and Jean Segura to pick up his 10th save of the season.

In the series finale tomorrow afternoon at 1:10 PM ET, the Marlins will send veteran southpaw Randy Wolf (0-0, 1.80) to the mound to face off against Jimmy Nelson, who will be making his season debut.

Wolf will be making his first start since 2012 when he started two games for the Baltimore Orioles.

The Offense:

The Marlins scored just single runs in the second and seventh innings in what turned out to be a rough night for the bats.

The two RBI’s went to Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Jeff Baker, as Saltalamacchia drove in a run on a double in the second and Baker on a single in the seventh.

Though the team picked up 8 hits, they went just 2-11 with runners in scoring position on the night.

In fact, the heart of the order (Stanton, McGehee & Jones) each left four men on base.

Then again, I guess you could say the Marlins ability to prevent the Brewers from getting hits with runners in scoring position is what won them the ballgame.

The Marlins pitching staff was able to get key outs in big situations and held the opposition to just 2 hits in 12 at-bats with runners in scoring position.
