Missed part of the show? Here’s a rewind of the program on October 23, 2013.
The Mariotti Show streams live M-F noon to 3 ET.
Hour One on The Jay Mariotti Show: October 23, 2013:
Jay sets the scene for a purist’s World Series and says Game 1 is more important than you think — nine of the last 10 winners have won the Series. He expects bigger ratings because of the national familiarity with the teams and, of course, the Boston beards. There is charisma in this series, and the ratings do spike when the Red Sox are in the Series. If the Cardinals win one of the first two, they’ll go home with a significant advantage — no DH in the middle three games, meaning Boston has to sit David Ortiz or Mike Napoli and loses production and that special karma. Jay says Jameis Winston fever is growing when ESPN runs his midweek press conference live, and Jay maps out how Jameis wins the Heisman and Florida State gets to the national championship game — basically, hope Oregon loses to Stanford and Marcus Mariota throws interceptions. Jay wraps up the Miami reprieve — no bowl ban, only nine lost scholarships over three years — and disgustedly says the NCAA is dead as we’ve known it and no longer is interested in enforcing rules and investigating programs — too much money is in the sport to get in the way of the ESPN/power conferences party.
Hour Two on The Jay Mariotti Show: October 23, 2013:
Josh Freeman won’t play Sunday night, and Jay is thankful. No one ever has been less prepared for an NFL game than Freeman was Monday night, and to put America through two prime-time embarrassments wouldn’t be good for him, the Vikings or the rest of us. Jay resets the World Series and raves about The Cardinal Way, particularly as it pertains to grooming young, fireballing pitchers who are ready to win in October. For all the talk about Koji Uehara — who has no facial hair, by the way — the Cardinals have a young closer (Trevor Rosenthal) who throws 100 mph. Watch the duel between Jacoby Ellsbury, that rare baserunning threat in the sport today, and St. Louis’ state-of-the-art catcher, Yadier Molina. Jay can’t believe the Red Sox actually have nicknames for their beards, but hey, it works for them — it’s part of the worst-to-first unity developed early this season after the players went AWOL on Bobby Valentine last season. Jay talks about the weather in Boston — cold, rainy — and says it’s the perfect backdrop in a Series of two classic baseball towns.
Hour Three on The Jay Mariotti Show: October 23, 2013:
Jay interviews actor Anthony Mackie about the future of journalism and the Internet (he stars in “The Fifth Estate,” about WikiLeaks creep Julian Assange), his beloved New Orleans Saints, the Manning boys and all things Big Easy. Jay says Peyton Manning missed practice with what the Broncos are calling a minor medical issue; Jay isn’t so sure and reminds people that Manning was beaten up by the Colts on Sunday night and that he had four neck delicate surgeries. Jay extols the virtues of Andrew Luck — the next great American sportsman — and praises the work by Chuck Pagano and Ryan Grigson, who, like Luck, also had to succeed Hall of Fame figures in Tony Dungy and Bill Polian. Jay likes the Red Sox tonight and Michael Wacha in the Cardinals in Game 2.
