Missed part of the show? Here’s a rewind of the program on September 3, 2013.
The Mariotti Show streams live M-F noon to 3 ET.
Hour One on The Jay Mariotti Show: September 3, 2013:
Jay extols the virtues of Jameis Winston, the new hot-button topic of college football and latest in the assembly line of exciting dual-threat quarterbacks dominating the sport. Jay contrasts Winston’s poise and maturity with the lack thereof regarding Johnny Manziel, who embarrassed himself with unnecessary gestures and might be in danger of self-destructing at some point this season. Clemson’s entrance down the hill of its home stadium is show business at its best, Jay says, and he can’t wait for a Florida State-at-Clemson showdown next month that will play a role in the national championship race. Jay says Alabama should consider it a backhanded compliment when an easy victory is viewed as a disappointment. Jay is about to give up on Georgia ever winning a national title under Mark Richt, who can’t win big games. Jay thinks WIll Muschamp’s media-related blowup symbolizes how he’s cracking under the pressure of high expectations at Florida.
Hour Two on The Jay Mariotti Show: September 3, 2013:
Jay discusses his column on Tim Tebow — it’s time to start his life’s work as a televangelist — and says he hasn’t mastered the quick-tempo, rhythm-based mechanics necessary to be even a backup QB in the NFL. Jay says he needs distance from the Aaron Hernandez and concussion discussions that dominated the NFL offseason before he can plunge head-first into game hype. He does say Baltimore and Denver is a cool debut, but wonders why the NFL persisted in hanging Joe Flacco and Ravens banners through a bitter Denver just because the game was shifted there from Baltimore. Jay thinks Rex Ryan is a one-dimensional flop who hasn’t been able to develop a quarterback — he says the Jets won’t throw balls in Darrelle Revis’ direction Sunday because they don’t want further embarrassment heaped upon their mess — but Jay refuses to criticize Ryan for attending his son’s first college game at Clemson on the final NFL cut-down day. Jay reminds fans not to forget Aaron Rodgers’ greatness in the hype blitz of RGIII, Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick. Jay says Seattle and Houston are his Super Bowl picks. Jay is sad to see the game of tennis pass by Roger Federer.
Hour Three on The Jay Mariotti Show: September 3, 2013:
Jay discusses why quarterbacks are the most important, magnetic figures in team sports and why it’s exciting to see the young ones emerge, whether it’s Kaepernick, Wilson, RGIII and Andrew Luck last year or the likes of Jameis Winston and Tajh Boyd in college football. Jay dips into baseball and is shocked to see a race for the final wild-card berth in the AL, all because Tampa Bay can’t hit, takes the long way to the stadium in Oakland and is watching relief pitchers get locked in the bathroom. Jay mourns the death of Tommy Morrison, who was diagnosed with HIV as an elite heavyweight fighter. Jay relates the day’s news that Texas A&M won’t be allowing Johnny Manziel to speak to the media anytime soon, which will create circus-like surveillance of Manziel next week when the national media descend upon College Station. Jay continues his preview of the NFL season. Jay hails the aquatic triumph of Diana Nyad, who never relinquished her Cuba-to-Florida Keys swimming dream and pulled it off at age 64, jellyfish be damned.
