Missed part of the show? Here’s a rewind of the program on August 20, 2013.
The Mariotti Show streams live M-F noon to 3 ET.
Hour One on The Jay Mariotti Show: August 20, 2013:
Jay marvels as Michael Vick receives another big opportunity in his Nine Lives career, having been handed the keys to Chip Kelly’s Bugatti Veyron offense — read: fast — in Philadelphia. He predicts Kelly and Vick will have some success, but it won’t be easy to replicate the fast pace at Oregon because NFL officials are conditioned to administer game flow at a traditional pace. Jay doesn’t blame Redskins coach Mike Shanahan for allowing Dr. James Andrews to make the opening-day call on Robert Griffin III. Jay denounces Maria Sharapova for even thinking of changing her name to Sugarpova to promote a candy line at the U.S. Open — it turned out to be a hoax, of which Jay is ashamed for initially buying into. Jay thinks Jason Collins, rejected by the Detroit Pistons, may not have an NBA job this season and prepares the gay community for the possibility. Jay wonders why baseball teams grant 10-year megacontracts when Albert Pujols is breaking down and Alex Rodriguez is an all-time train wreck. Jay makes sure we don’t forget one of baseball’s great ambassadors, Mariano Rivera, and his impending retirement amid the A-Rod circus.
Hour Two on The Jay Mariotti Show: August 20, 2013:
Jay takes calls and addresses a column by Yahoo! Sports’ Dan Wetzel, who suggests Little League players be paid. If Disney Co., the ESPN parent, pays salaries to child actors on the Disney Channel, why not pay baseball entertainers a stipend given the millions rolling around the Little League Inc. paradigm? Jay resets the Jason Collins issue and urges the gay community not to overreact with protests if Collins remains unemployed. He also suggests pro sports franchises build locker rooms with individual, closed-door stalls so athletes can have their privacy as society moves forward. Jay applauds the Miami/Dade County police department for saying officers violated protocol by giving LeBron James an open-road escort for a Jay-Z/Justin Timberlake stadium concert. Jay says the Tampa Bay Rays are his favorite in the AL East because of their traditionally deep starting pitching, a balanced offense and Joe Maddon’s loose, animals-in-clubhouse envrionment. Jay takes calls on the topics.
Hour Three on The Jay Mariotti Show: August 20, 2013:
Jay cites financial figures that Little League Inc. is making off its annual World Series, per Yahoo! Sports. He wonders why commissioner Bud Selig has yet to suspend Ryan Dempster for plunking Alex Rodriguez, hoping that Selig wouldn’t be so unprofessional and personal to absolve Dempster because the commissioner is at war with A-Rod. Jay asks people not to watch Rodriguez during the Yankees-Blue Jays game airing live. Jay mentions that John Madden thinks Chip Kelly will have more impact than any NFL figure this season. Jay wonders if Yasiel Puig, who tore into an umpire for no good reason and had to be restrained, is a timebomb waiting to happen. Jay is tired of President Obama’s sports fetish. Jay applauds ESPN for its early use of Keith Olbermann as a commentator. Jay feels sorry for Manti Te’o, who first was victimized by a catfishing scandal and the poor reporting surrounding it, and now is injured and wearing a walking boot. Jay laughs about his recent Gene Simmons interview and urges people to listen to it on mariottishow.com. As Jay signs off, MLB announces a Dempster suspension.
