Missed part of the show? Here’s a rewind of the program on August 29, 2013.
The Mariotti Show streams live M-F noon to 3 ET.
Hour One on The Jay Mariotti Show: August 29, 2013:
Jay pats himself on the back for correctly forecasting the Johnny Manziel decision — the hapless and toothless NCAA backs off, shows no real interest in investigating the pay-for-autographs allegations and surrenders to the big-money machine that is college football. The NCAA as we’ve known it is dead, ceding power to the Big Six conferences that will rule the sport — without a separate investigative unit, leading to rampant cheating — when the $7.3-billion playoff system with ESPN launches next year. Jay interviews former Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine and asks why the Red Sox are winning this year when they weren’t winning with Valentine last year. He asks Valentine how he would handle the mood swings of Yasiel Puig and brings up the historic greatness of Miguel Cabrera — Valentine already calls him one of baseball’s all-time best hitters — along with the continued front-office proficiency of teams such as Oakland and Tampa Bay. Jay interviews NFL Network anayyst Akbar Gbaja-Biamila, who disagrees with Jay’s Seattle-Houston Super Bowl pick — he likes Philadelphia, thinking out of the box. Akbar says Bill Belichick doesn’t deserve blame for the Aaron Hernandez fallout; Jay strongly disagrees, saying Belichick enabled the ill behavior.
Hour Two on The Jay Mariotti Show: August 29, 2013:
Jay says the NFL “got off easy” in its $765-million settlement with 4,500-plus former players who were suing the league in the ongoing concussions crisis. By settling, the league avoids what would be a devastating courtroom procession of unhealthy former players and won’t have to acknowledge what it did or didn’t know for decades about the after-effects of head injuries. Jay can’t believe Yasiel Puig, blessed with so much talent, is moping and acting like a jerk when his team is winning big. Jay relates his experiences with athletes angry at him, and he rips Cincinnati’s Brandon Phillips for referring to a newspaper reporter as “fat” and using other expletives in a clubhouse confrontation. Jay is thrilled that the college football season is upon us and that he won’t have to discuss Johnny Football and other off-field issues.
Hour Three on The Jay Mariotti Show: August 29, 2013:
Jay calls Jadeveon Clowney his Heisman Trophy favorite and suggests he launch the campaign with three or four sacks against North Carolina tonight. Jay replays the Bobby Valentine interview. Jay resets the breaking NFL settlement story, and predicts — boring! — that Alabama will play for another national championship against either Stanford or Ohio State, depending on which has the more computer-friendly victories in what he thinks will be undefeated regular seasons for both. Jay says Stanford, with Oregon and Notre Dame on the sked, will have a more impressive ledger than Ohio State in the weak Big 10. Jay starts the countdown to college football: Three hours away.
