Mariotti Show Replay: Friday, August 15th

The Jay Mariotti Podcast for Friday, August 15: Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Baseball has a new commissioner, Rob Manfred, who is a perpetuation of the Selig status quo. That doesn’t bode well for the sport’s biggest issue — growing the game to younger demographics and stopping the gradual erosion of the fan base. Manfred has helped achieve 19 years of labor piece and played the top-cop role in the Biogenesis PED scandal, but he knows nothing about marketing, which is necessary given the youthful starpower on the field (Mike Trout, Clayton Kershaw, Yasiel Puig). Interesting that Manfred only has a three-year contract after Jerry Reinsdorf and other owners tried to shoot down his candidacy. As NASCAR finally gets around to banning drivers from getting out of their cars on tracks — it always takes a tragedy for NASCAR to react — Tony Stewart wisely is keeping a low profile and not resuming his driving schedule. Still a possibility he could be charged with reckless intent or vehicular homicide. Guest: Bob Nightengale, USA Today baseball writer, on covering the political mudslinging in Baltimore and the Manfred story.

The Mariotti Show streams live M-F noon to 3 ET.
