Missed part of the show? Here’s a rewind of the program on September 6, 2013.
The Mariotti Show streams live M-F noon to 3 ET.
Hour One on The Jay Mariotti Show: September 6, 2013: Live from Miami, Jay hails the inspirational performance of Peyton Manning, whose career was in doubt only 18 months ago. Remember when repeated neck surgeries were supposed to end his football days and send him off to a broadcast booth or front office? Manning again announced his rebirth with seven touchdown passes against a Baltimore team in disarray. Jay says it’s reasonable to think Manning, who will have to carry the Broncos while Von Miller serves his six-game suspension and the defense settles, could have another MVP season because of the numbers he’ll put up and the weapons he has. The Ravens collapsed after Dallas Clark dropped a TD pass and coach John Harbaugh, fresh off signing a lucrative contract extension, didn’t challenge a Wes Welker drop that led to an avalanche of Manning scoring passes. Jay says Manning was so awesome, it even stole attention from one of those ridiculous gaffes that never should happen: Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan celebrating a touchdown too soon, fumbling the ball before the goal line and watching it bounce out-of-bounds. Jay can’t believe Riley Cooper is still on the Eagles roster and says Chip Kelly is ignoring a serious internal issue — Cooper’s racial epithet/viral video over the summer — that will be explosive all season in football-psycho Philadelphia. Jay says he’s amazed how much he talks about the Harbaughs — Jim is just trying to get inside the Packers’ heads with talk about their potential targeting of Colin Kaepernick. Jay wonders if the read-option offense is a fad or the future.http://audio.sportstalkflorida.com/1040/JMS96131.mp3
Hour Two on The Jay Mariotti Show: September 6, 2013: Jay envisions the Texans and Broncos playing in the AFC title game. Jay makes his NFL picks for the weekend. Jay says he’s in Miami for the big college game of the weekend — Miami vs. Florida — and calls it a grudge match between two programs at a crossroads. He predicts Miami will win and keep its arrow pointing upward, despite a looming NCAA penalty that may be softer than anyone thinks, and says Florida is not the same program under Will Muschamp that it was under Urban Meyer and Steve Spurrier. Jay says Jadeveon Clowney will have a better game this week — if he doesn’t, he’ll wonder why Spurrier doesn’t condition him better — and predicts South Carolina will stay in the national title picture with a victory over sorry Georgia. Jay laughs at how Tom Brady suggests Johnny Manziel is acting like “a turd” in a week when Barry Switzer and Lou Holtz have said they’ve wanted to strangle the problem child. Jay says Manziel nonetheless is an important figure in college sports history, pointing to the Time magazine cover story that asks whether college athletes should be paid based on his autographs-for-pay controversy. Jay delves into baseball, raves about the Red Sox and says he hopes Mariano Rivera makes the playoffs one more time, countering that with his hopes Alex Rodriguez doesn’t. Jay is happy Ryan Braun is cold-calling Brewers’ season-ticket holders to offer apologies for his PED scandal, but still wants Braun to sit and answer questions at a news conference.http://audio.sportstalkflorida.com/1040/JMS96132.mp3
Hour Three on The Jay Mariotti Show: September 6, 2013: Jay juxtaposes the Peyton Manning in crisis 18 months ago against the current rejuvenated legend. He praises him for making the most of the receivers around him, including the current Thomases. He rips Chip Kelly for comments last hour that the Riley Cooper controversy has blown over; Kelly is in denial, has no chance of winning in Washington on Monday night and may be all wrong for the NFL. Jay gives listeners a tour of Marlins Park and calls it the House That Ozzie Guillen Ruined, citing Guillen’s pro-Castro comments and blaming Marlins ownership for the teardown of last season’s roster and the beginnings of yet another youth movement. Jay looks forward to sitting in a suite among 6,000 ballpark fans. Jay advises listeners to watch history this weekend at the U.S. Open, in the names of Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal. Jay picks Miami over Florida, South Carolina over Georgia and Michigan over Notre Dame. Jay wants to try Cuban food inside the ballpark.http://audio.sportstalkflorida.com/1040/JMS96133.mp3
