Missed part of the show? Here’s a rewind of the program on August 30, 2013.
The Mariotti Show streams live M-F noon to 3 ET.
Hour One on The Jay Mariotti Show: August 30, 2013:
Jay tries to balance the awkwardness of a college football season starting just hours after the NFL settled its lawsuit with aggrieved former players for $765 million. Jay is stunned at how easily fans and media can separate the life-and-death aspect of football from the daily story lines and game action. He says the tired/gassed Jadeveon Clowney already has lost points in the Heisman Trophy race because defensive players, who rarely win the award, must dominate from the very start of a season. He praises Fresno State’s Derek Carr for his five-TD performance after weeks of sleepless nights while his infant son, who is now home, fought for his life in a hospital. He predicts Tim Tebow will make the Patriots’ roster after proving he can complete a pass or two. Jay worries that Lamar Odom, busted in the wee hours for DUI, is headed for tragedy.
Hour Two on The Jay Mariotti Show: August 30, 2013:
Jay chastizes the NFL for not having a news conference after the settlement announcement and explaining how it intends to continue addressing the concussion crisis. Jay says the settlement feels more like the NFL removing a burden from its workload than actually caring deeply about the welfare of players. Jay can’t believe the U.S. Open crowd in New York was rooting harder for a French showman than John Isner, the best-ranked American in a sorry current lot of U.S. male players. Jay thinks Robert Griffin III should stop the defiant act and allows his coaches and doctors to make the announcement on his return to the Redskins. Jay thinks the Raiders should let Terrell Pryor have the QB job because the franchise is going nowhere anyway. Jay mentions how the inventor of the foam index finger is upset that Miley Cyrus used it during the Video Music Awards in ways he never intended. Jay says the baseball weekend is about Miguel Cabrera, Ryne Sandberg’s return to Wrigley Field as Phillies manager and the A’s playing the Rays in “Moneyball” wars.
Hour Three on The Jay Mariotti Show: August 30, 2013:
Jay wonders why Jadeveon Clowney was so gassed and says Steve Spurrier, as the South Carolina coach, is in charge of conditioning when everyone knows about suffocating August weather in the South. Jay wonders what happened to men’s tennis in the U.S. after Connors, McEnroe, Agassi, Sampras and Roddick. Jay thinks Rex Ryan has nothing to lose and should consider Matt Simms as his QB. Jay runs down his weekend college picks — Clemson over Georgia — and asks listeners not to be mad if they lose bets based on his picks.
