By now almost everyone in the country has heard of Manti Te’o. Before the National Championship Game, even before he finished second in the Heisman Trophy race, Te’o had left an impression on many people.

What will happen to Manti Te’o now?

In an Sports Illustrated special about Te’o and the trials and tribulations that brought him to where he is today, Te’o spoke of a recent tragedy in his life. The passing of his grandmother, and girlfriend. His grandmother, Annette Santiago passed away at the age of 72. Te’o received word of his girlfriend, Lennay Marie Kekua’s death just six hours later.

After hearing his heartfelt story, it was difficult not to root for him.

Earlier today, Deadspin.com broke a story revealing that the entire story was a hoax.

Te’o did in fact lose his grandmother that day, however, Lennay Marie Kekua did not die six hours later; according to the story, she never existed!
