Orlando Magic Pre-Draft: Marcus Smart
The Orlando Magic have some big decisions to make when it comes to the NBA draft on June 26th. Orlando has the fourth and eleventh overall picks and could really position themselves to be a playoff team next season. Last year the Magic selected guard Victor Oladipo with the second pick and he had a great season, finsihing second in the NBA Rookie of The Year voting.
Over the next couple of weeks I will break down possible draft prospects for the Magic.
Born: March 6, 1994 (age 20)
Height: 6' 4" (1.93 m)
It's only a matter of time before veteran point guard Jameer Nelson will be on his way out of Orlando, so the Magic need to look into drafting a point guard with the fourth overall pick.
Size and Strength
Ability to post smaller guards
Great with his back to the basket
Rebounding ability on both ends
Agressive in the open court
Finds guys in transition
Absorbs contact and finishes
Can pressure the ball full-court
Inconsistent outside shooter
Poor shot selection
Gets "dared" to shoot by defense
Bad body language
You can nitpick with any young player coming into the league. They will all have areas of weakness but you have to weigh the good vs. the bad and determine if that player can help your franchise in the long run. Oladipo is the future in Orlando, so having Smart along side him head coach Jacque Vaughn will have to teach these two young guys to protect the ball because they can be turnover prone. On the other hand you could have a very stout defense with Smart, Oladipo and Maurice Harkless. Smart and Oladipo have the ability to play both guard positions, giving coach Vaughn the confidence to experiment.
