Longoria Blast Two Homers, Rays Defeat Yankees 8-3

The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the New York Yankees by a final score of 8-3 last night.  With the win the Rays maintain their 1-game lead over the Cleveland Indians who defeated the Chicago White Sox and their 2-game lead over the Texas Rangers who defeated the Houston Astros.

David_Price_TOR_JulyDavid Price worked the 7 innings allowing single runs in the 1st and 3rd innings before settling down. He allowed only 6 hits striking out and walking 0 to pick up the win to raise his record to 9-8 with a 3.39 ERA.

Phil Hughes got the start and only lasted 2 innings allowing 3R/ER on 7 hits striking out 2 and walking 1 in dropping his record to 4-14 with a 5.19 ERA.

The game was close as it entered the top of the 6th inning but the Rays broke the game open thanks to a lackadaisical effort on a routine double play ball by Robinson Cano.

With 1-out and Ben Zobrist at 1st Wil Myers sent a groundball to shortstop Brendan Ryan for the inning ending 6-4-3 but neither Ryan or Cano seemed to have any life on their relays resulting in Myers beating out Cano’s throw to keep the inning alive.

James Loney followed with a single to advance Myers to second and bring Evan Longoria to the plate. David Huff got Longoria down in the count 1-2 but left a fastball out over the plate which Longoria drove for a 3-run homer to push the Rays lead to 6-3.

David DeJesus added a punctuation mark on the inning by following Longoria’s blast with one of his own.

The Yankees mounted a rally in the bottom of the 8th by loading the bases and scoring a run on a bases loaded walk to Lyle Overbay on a close 3-2 pitch by Joel Peralta. The rally was short lived as Peralta retired Curtis Granderson on a ground out to second.

The Rays answered the Yankees run thanks to Evan Longoria’s second home run of the evening off Preston Claiborne to lead off the top of the ninth.

The Rays and Yankees finish their series this evening at 7:05 as Alex Cobb (10-3, 2.90 ERA) takes on Ivan Nova (9-5, 3.13 ERA).
