RECAP: Longball Bites Randy Wolf In 3-5 Loss To Cubs

Home Runs Hurt Marlins For Second Straight Game

MLB: Miami Marlins at Chicago Cubs

After the Marlins lost game one via a walk-off home run, the longball came back to bite the team again in a 2-5 loss to the Cubs this afternoon.

Randy Wolf got the start and picked up the loss as he allowed a total of four earned runs on 9 hits and 1 walk through 5 2/3 innings. Three of the four runs were scored on home runs by Emilio Bonifacio and Junior Lake.

Jeff Samardzija, on the other hand, held the Marlins to two runs over 7 innings on 5 hits, 1 walk, and 8 strikeouts.

The Marlins took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning with a solo blast to center from Christian Yelich. You can view the homer here.

The Cubs answered back in the bottom of the third inning with a longball of their own, though, a two-run blast from former Marlin Emilio Bonifacio.

The Cubs weren’t done hitting homers either, as Junior Lake hit two home runs in the afternoon. His first came in the bottom of the fifth to extend the Cubs lead to 3-1 and the second came in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 5-2.

One Cubs fan didn’t mind letting the Marlins players on the field know how he felt about the team after Lake’s second home run, either:

The Marlins only scored one other run on the afternoon on an RBI groundout by Casey McGehee after Stanton reached third on a wild pitch by Samardzija.

The Marlins look to avoid the sweep on the road tomorrow afternoon as they send Henderson Alvarez (3-3, 2.62) to face Jake Arrieta (1-1, 3.00).

Alvarez is coming off an 88-pitch complete-game shutout against the Rays and hasn’t allowed a run over his last three starts, a span of 21 innings.
