Saturday’s Premier League scoreboard showed some one sided blowouts. It was the blowout win by Liverpool that helped Chelsea reach the top of the Barclay’s Premier League standings.
Liverpool crushed Arsenal as Martin Skrtel and Raheem Sterling scored two goals apiece at Anfield in a 5-1 rout. The result cuts Liverpool’s deficit behind Arsenal to five points. The Reds, on 50 points, maintain their fourth-place position in the top flight while the Gunners, staying on 55 points, dropping them to second place where they sit one point back of Chelsea who has a league best 56 points. Chelsea also got some help as Manchester City who played to a scoreless draw at home against Norwich City.
So with things falling into place for them in the standings Chelsea did what they had to do to claim the top spot by putting together a masterful win over an undermanned Newcastle United team 3-0.
The day belonged to the Belgian magician, Eden Hazzrad, who had a hat trick scoring all three goals in magnificent form, continuing his challenge to Luis Suarez to be considered the player of the season.
His first goal came in the 26th minute. Frank Lampard – enjoying a characteristically strolled return to Chelsea’s midfield – pushed the ball forward to him as he lurked in front of the Newcastle area. In a blur of limbs, Hazard flicked it past Williamson then in one fluid movement played it out to Branislav Ivanovic. When the full back pulled the ball back from the edge of the area, Hazard had timed his run perfectly to whip the ball beyond Tim Krul.
The battle of Wales saw the powerful Swansea City took out Cardiff City by a 3-0 score. Four days after taking charge of Swansea City, following the impromptu dismissal of Michael Laudrup, the interim manager Gary Monk was pinching himself in the home dug out as second half goals from Wayne Routledge, Nathan Dyer and Wilfried Bony lifted Swansea four points clear of the drop zone.
Here is the complete Premier League scoreboard from Saturday February 8th.
