Devon Schneider scored a career-high five goals and seven points, while Shannon Gilroy became the first Gator to score 100 points in a season as the Florida lacrosse team steamed past the Denver Pioneers, 19-9, on Sunday at Donald R. Dizney Stadium. The fourth-seeded Gators advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive year. The game officially lasted eight hours, which includes severe weather delays of six hours and nine minutes.
The Gators looked poised to run away with the game early, going up 3-0 with less than four minutes off the clock. However, after the first weather delay of 52 minutes, Denver came out with renewed energy and pulled within one, 4-3, in less than five minutes. Florida slowed Denver down and stretched its lead to 8-4 before the second weather delay took place with 8:38 remaining in the first half.
Five hours and 17 minutes later, play resumed and the Gators closed the first half on a 3-1 spurt that increased their advantage to 11-5. The Pioneers attempted to rally for a second time, scoring three unanswered goals, spanning the end of the first half and the beginning of the second, and putting the score at 11-7. Florida took control of the game again, this time with an 8-0 run to put the score at 19-7 with 2:04 left on the clock. Denver scored two goals in the final 17 seconds of the game, but it was too late to make a difference and the Gators ended their marathon day with a 19-9 victory.
