Following the biggest win in program-history, the No. 23 UCF football team did not want a repeat of the near disaster against Memphis.
The Knights (6-1, 3-0) came out firing from the first drive of the game, finishing with a 62-17 victory over the winless UConn Huskies (0-7, 0-3).
Quarterback Blake Bortles went 20-for-24 in the game with 286 yards and five scores (one rushing). Bortles played in just the first 33 minutes of the game, being relieved after UCF took a 52-10 lead early in the second half.
Bortles tied Darin Slack (1984-87) for fifth all-time in passing completions at UCF with 459. The redshirt junior also now has 15 touchdown passes on the season, to go along with his 1,870 yards.
Wide receiver J.J. Worton had six receptions in the game, giving him 105 for his career. He also had a career-high 119 yards, while adding a touchdown.
Running back Storm Johnson saw limited action in the game, but scored a touchdown on the first drive of the game. The touchdown was his ninth of the season, after entering 2013 with four career scores.
UCF wide receiver Rannell Hall had himself a nice ball game, with 83 yards from scrimmage, on nine touches, and a rushing touchdown.
Jeff Godfrey also added six receptions for 54 yards and three scores in the air.
It was an all-around win for the Knights in every facet of the game.
The UCF defense allowed just 90 first-half yards, while forcing four turnovers in the game. A majority of UConn’s 238 yards came against the UCF second-team defense.
Kicker Sean Moffitt also had a career-game, hitting on all eight extra points, and drilling both of his field goal attempts. Moffitt hit a career-high 50-yard field goal in the first half.
The win is the first American Athletic Conference victory at home for UCF, while improving to 3-0 in league games.
Up next for the Knights is a home game against Houston on Nov. 9, following a bye week. The Knights and Cougars are currently tied for first place in the AAC standings.
