Insider: Knights activate key players
For the first time this season UCF fans will be able to see the complete 2012 UCF men’s basketball roster on the court.
The Knights have an addition to the active roster. Junior Calvin Newell will play his first game as a Knight against Bethune Cookman Wednesday at 7.p.m. at the UCF Arena.
Due to NCAA regulations, Newell had to sit out this past year since he transferred from Oklahoma. The Philadelphia native is eager to get some minutes with the black and gold uniform as he has had a year to prepare for debut as a Knight.
Newell says sitting out a year hasn’t been easy but he has used that time to strengthen his weaknesses. As a Sooner Newell averaged 13 points per game only time will tell how he will mesh on the court with the rest of the Knights.
Another recent addition to the Knight’s active roster is Matt Williams. Williams had to sit out the first five because he has been recovering from an illness.
Williams played his first game in a black and gold uniform against Florida Tech on Dec. 1. During that game, Williams set the bar high by scoring 7-of-9 three pointers in 13 minutes.
A challenge that the entire team recently had to face staying in game mode during an 11-day break of no games. In efforts to keep the players in game more the UCF coaching staff have set up scrimmages throughout the 11 days.
UCF has seven non-conference games before starting conference games. The Knights plan to use the next seven games to fine their skills and work on the chemistry on the court.
